transparent background

hello,

apologies, as I'm sure this is simple but haven't found a solution yet. I wish to place one finished plot on top of another, so in Layout I load both graphs. The specific placement means that part of the top graph obscures features in the graph below it. So I go to the top graph and from the right-click menu choose Colors/Graph Background (or "window background", or "both backgrounds"), unclick the "Opaque" box, and set the alpha to 0.01 (it doesn't like values smaller than that; and "1" automatically re-selectes the "Opaque" option).

There is no change in the layout: the top graph still obscures the bottom one. Given the names of the options I chose above, I'm a bit surprised. Is there a different way to accomplish making the "background" elements--just the white area--of the top graph transparent?

Thank you---

In the layout, double-click the top graph. In the Modify Objects dialog, turn on the Transparent checkbox.
