Image Plot of 4D Waves: Plane Selection
I am plotting planes of 3D and 4D waves in an image plot. In the Modify Image Appearance menu, there is a variable called Plane, which for a 3D wave is the Layer that you want to plot. However, for a 4D wave, the Plane variable represents the (Layer, Chunk) pair that you want to plot.
As far as I understand, for a 1x2x3x4 wave,
Plane 0 = wave0[][][0][0]
Plane 1 = wave0[][][1][0]
Plane 2 = wave0[][][2][0]
Plane 3 = wave0[][][0][1]
...
Plane 6 = wave0[][2][3]
I think it would be more intuitive to replace the Plane variable in the Modify Image Appearance menu with Layer and Chunk. Indeed, this is the scheme used in Data Browser to show wave preview images, which makes it easy to keep track of which plane you are plotting.
Thanks for the comment. I agree.
The initial implementation of
ModifyImagedates back to the mid-1990s, around the time Igor was transitioning from supporting 1D data to supporting 4D data. Supporting both layers and chunks would require either extending the existingplanekeyword syntax or introducing additional keywords. In my opinion, the best approach would be to leave the
planekeyword unchanged for backward compatibility and add two new keywords that explicitly specify the layer and chunk dimensions.I'll create an entry for this enhancement request in our tracking system.
